International Women's Day is just around the corner (March 8th) and we couldn't be more excited for the venture that we have chosen to support this year.
Cate Butcher, who runs 'Wanderlust Women's Adventures' has organised a group of women to hike and summit the largest mountain in Africa - Mt Kilimanjaro - to help raise awareness of women & empowerment in Tanzania. Their mission is to summit the mountain on 8th of March which is International Women's Day. They have also raised enough donations to bring 2 Tanzanian women on their summit hike with them which will take 7 days - amazing!
The International Women's Day trek is allabout “Women supporting Women’ as well as supportinga local Tanzanian charity ‘Give a Heart to Africa’. This non-profit organization empowers women with the skills to improve their situations and pull themselves out of poverty by providing them with free English and vocational training as well as assisting them in micro-businesses. In the patriarchal society of Tanzania only 5% of girls finish secondary school. Without education and guidance, most women end up serving their husbands, living in poverty or struggling to provide as a single parent.
On this Women's Day trek, 2 graduates from the Tanzanian women's school will trek with Cate and her crew to summit Kilimanjaro. By sharing this experience with these girls and seeing the mountain they grew up under, through their eyes, gives us all a richer understanding of the women of this region and their amazing part of the world. It’s a rare experience for a local Tanzanian woman to summit the mountain as it’s financially out of reach and mostly only male guides and porters that work on the mountain.
Wanderlust women's Adventures is all about sharing experiences, connecting with a new culture and supporting local women in every way possible throughout their trekking adventures - and we're looking forward to following their adventure!
Bird & Kite have donated a sum of money towards the purchase of 100 handmade and washable menstrual kits that will be shared among Tanzanian women living below the poverty line and in need of such essentials. Cate will be educating the women on how to use these.
We will be following these ladies over on social media during their trek in which they will summit Mt Kilimanjaro on the 8th of March - International Women's Day. We will also be donating 20% of all of our online sales for the 1st week of March to support this Tanzanian charity.
Cate's mission is to support and empower all women to embrace their full potential and we couldn't agree more with her! If you are interested in going on a hike with Cate to spread awareness, you can send her a direct email here.
